National Art School
Tzannes Associates won an invited architectural competition for the redevelopment of the National Art School which is located on the historic site of the Old Darlinghurst Gaol.
In accordance with the competition requirements, two alternate designs were submitted for the jury’s consideration. The historic fabric of the existing buildings and the location of the National Art School within the Darlinghurst area created a context within which new architecture will be experienced in exceptional circumstances. Teaching art involves a very broad range of equipment, space types, lighting, computer technology, mechanical technology and related facility requirements. Each solution responded to site specific issues to develop appropriate and distinctive architecture, varying the plan type, spatial arrangements, materials and details.
