SMH features Daramu House award: “It is one of nine Australian projects to receive one of 130 gongs in this year’s International Architecture Awards from The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design.”
The awards for architecture, urban planning projects and landscape attracted more than 800 entries from 46 countries.
Sydney architect Alec Tzannes’ Daramu House in Barangaroo – Australia’s first commercial multi-storey timber office building – also received an award, along with Durbach Block Jaggers with John Wardle Architect’s Phoenix Central Station arts venue, and Tonkin Zulaikha Greer’s design for the Wenona Athenaeum School.
Barangaroo’s Daramu House, which won the NSW architecture awards in 2020 for a commercial building and for sustainability, was true to its values and specific to the place, Mr Tzannes said. It illustrates the commercial application of low carbon technology, he said, borrowing ideas from traditional wooden warehouses.
Mr Tzannes said he was “genuinely proud” to display the award. The Athenaeum was an old and prestigious award, he said, overseen by a philanthropic non-profit organisation with a “noble and ethical judging system”.
