Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas receives 2 awards at the Australian Timber Design Awards
Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas has been recognised for excellence in timber design for both Interior Design – Commercial and Furniture and Joinery categories.
Timber has been used extensively in the interiors of the building. The built structure and walls are restrained in detail, texture and colour which allow the timber elements to be the focus of the interior spaces. Engineered timber flooring with a hard-wax oil finish provides a warm, honey coloured backdrop to the sculptural timber elements throughout. American Oak veneer is used to create curved and fluid joinery elements.
At the ground floor, the entry foyer and pre-lecture room is defined by a single timber and brass joinery piece. This piece forms the first internal layer of security for the building, storage, acoustic attenuation, bar front and stair walls. Solid American Oak, rounded timber battens are paired with American Oak VG veneer panels to create continuity of materials throughout. The timber is finished with a natural oil for ease of ongoing maintenance. The Joinery piece includes sliding battened security screens, set alongside a free-standing timber veneer entry wall. The joinery appears as a single timber element sitting in the restored heritage listed warehouse; unifying a series of functional requirements and producing an uncluttered space.
