A compact historic hotel located in Sydney’s CBD has been transformed into a vibrant new city venue. All upper floors were redesigned and refurbished, presenting a variety of experiences within a compact city building: an existing sports bar on the street, an elegant new restaurant on the first floor, a multi-functional lounge bar on the second floor and a unique rooftop urban bar and garden under a retractable awning.
In a market where ‘distinctive’ is often achieved at the expense of authenticity, the integrity of this unique building has been retained and enhanced. Each level appeals to a different clientele, and at the same time, clearly forms part of a vibrant new whole. The interior architecture of the Republic hotel is rich in detail, warm and inviting for guests, sympathetic to the existing heritage character of the building and cost effective and innovative in the way it is conceived. Designed to be built over a very short time, the refurbishment was achieved with a minimum disruption to the ongoing hotel operation. Since the redesign, the performance of each of the spaces in the venue has improved significantly and in each case, it continues to attract a new clientele.
