Paragon Hotel is an important historic building in Circular Quay, both a landmark and a rare surviving 19th century hotel in continuous use in the CBD. Our main challenge was to find a point of difference for an indoor venue in an area where much of the competition enjoyed some of the most dramatic views and best outdoor spaces in Sydney.
New design opened up the roof to create a distinctive new outdoor space defined by the ribbon of green walls. Guests enjoy dramatic outlook to the surrounding city buildings above but also a more conventional view to Loftus and Alfred Streets through the existing windows which define the space as an outdoor ‘room’ and provide a visible tectonic link to the history of the building. In a market where ‘distinctive’ is often achieved at the expense of authenticity, the integrity of this historic hotel has been retained and enhanced.
